After all of the interviews we have conducted on our show, weâve noticed one recurring theme: the hunt for a literary agent is often more stressful than writing the actual book.
It doesnât have to be a mystery. If youâre sitting on a finished manuscript and wondering how to get it from your hard drive to a bookshop shelf, here is the no-nonsense roadmap to finding the right partner for your publishing journey.
1. The Golden Rule of Submission.
Before you even look at an agencyâs website, your manuscript must be finished, polished, and edited! In the world of traditional publishing, âI have a great ideaâ doesnât get you an agent; âI have a completed 80,000-word thrillerâ does. Agents are looking for a professional partnership, so show them you can cross the finish line. We have been told by our guests that the less work they need to do, the more likely they will accept.
2. The Research Phase: Donât Spray and Pray.
One of the biggest mistakes authors make is sending a mass email to every agent they find on Google. This is the fastest way to get a rejection.

Check the Acknowledgements: Look at books similar to yours published in the last three years. Who did the author thank? Thatâs your target list.
