The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean
This book is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!
It had me hooked from the first page to the last.
Lenn is vile and genuinely terrifying. He is so real and utterly believable, and that is what makes him the scariest villain in modern literature.
There are a few very good twists and turns in this novel, but they're not why you keep reading. You live this story with Jane (Thanh) and route for her on every page.
I loved the subtle nods to British culture (artic roll etc) and for me, it made the novel even more believable. The references to Of Mice and Men were a lovely touch too.
Cynth was a real game-changer of a character in more ways than one. I hate spoilers in reviews so I'll avoid that, but when I think back to all the really tense moments she's there, and that makes her really character special.
There were moments when I genuinely found this difficult to read, due to the graphic nature, but that is a testimony to the brilliance of Will Dean's writing.
This novel has been compared to Misery and Room - I think it's better than both and I loved those novels.
The Last Thing To Burn is a modern classic, it takes a brave writer to tackle human trafficking and Will Dean has done it brilliantly.
I've already picked up a few of his other books and I will be eagerly awaiting his future works too - read this novel, you won't regret it.
Huge thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for giving me the opportunity to read this fantastic book!
